Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the challenges that 3rd year students of english department, in Larbi Ben M'Hidi university encounter when translating proper names from english into arabic and vice versa.To achieve the goal of this study, we selected a random sample that comprises 40 third year students of english in Larbi Ben M'Hidi university, Oum-El-Bouaghi. During the second semester 2015/ 2016, we designed two research tools. The first tool is a questionnaire which was divided into two parts. The first part consists of seven questions to test the student's attitudes toward translation importance, which kind of translation they prefer, what is the aim of translation according to them, and whether they face or not any
problem when translating or not. The second part consists of seven questions to examine the students' awareness of translating proper names from english into arabic and vice versa, and to know if the students use a particular strategy in translating proper names or not. The second tool was a translation test that was designed to obtain data on the students'
performance when translating proper names from english/ arabic/ english, this translation test was given to the same sample, which consists of two exercises, containing sentences of proper names to be translated from english into arabic and from arabic into english.
