Abstract
Writing is an important skill for many learners and teachers to be developped. However, it can be a challenging task because it is often perceived as dull, boring and difficult. Interestingly, the purpose of the present study is to investigate teachers' and students' attitudes towards writing diaries as a tool to improve the writing skill. Though the aim of writing diaries is to free students from restrictions of time and teachers' evaluation and help them to write accurately, the majority of them do not write diaries. To this end, it is hypothesized that students have negative attitudes towards this technique. However, teachers consider it as effective and helpful to improve the writing skill. In order to investigate the truthfulness of the hypothesis, a quantitative study was conducted with second year LMD students and teachers of written expression course at Larbi Ben M'hidi University. The analysis of the questionnaires revealed that students in fact have negative attitudes towards writing diaries; whereas, teachers' questionnaire revealed the opposite. Based on the results concluded from this study, some recommendations are given concerning the improvement of EFL learners' writing such as reading; writing diaries.
