Abstract
The present work tries to shed light on the importance of using reading strategies and their effectiveness in developing secondary school students' reading comprehension. The goal of this research is to assess students' use of reading comprehension strategies. It also aims at investigating the role of english language teachers in training their students to use these strategies. Furthermore, it seeks to raise secondary school students' awareness about the importance of reading strategies in developing reading comprehension for secondary school students. In order to achieve the objectives of this study, a descriptive method was followed in which two questionnaires were administered to (18) teachers and (35) students at secondary school. The results showed that secondary school students have positive attitudes towards the use of reading strategies, but their use is inappropriate, the matter that led to their failure in achieving an adequate comprehension of what they read. Results analysis has equally demonstrated that secondary school teachers do not give their students sufficient instructions on reading strategies use, during reading sessions. Consequently, students are in need to enhance their use of reading strategies and that can be solely achieved by their teacher's adoption of strategy-based instruction approach, during reading sessions.
