Abstract
The American Congress is an institution that runs by numbers; however, women were and are still underrepresented. The present dissertation is intended to give an explanation to the underrepresentation of congresswomen by investigating the racism and the gender inequality they suffer from in this institution. This work discusses racism practiced against women of different ethnicities, such as Native American and Muslim women. The research draws attention to the role which gender inequality plays in preventing women from gaining seats in Congress, as well as shedding the light on the contrast in numbers between men and women. Furthermore, this work takes both Ilhan Omar and Sharice Davids as live examples to the racism and gender inequality women suffer from, especially because both women belong to marginalized categories that did not have the chance to enter Congress before 2019.
