In vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of thymus algeriensis extract

dc.description.abstractThe plants continue to provide humanity with new remedies. In recent years, interest in natural drug research has increased and herbal remedies have emerged as an alternative to synthetic products. The present work aims to determine the importance of Thymus algeriensis plant throw the evaluation of the total phenolic and flavonoids content and in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the methanolic extract of the plant. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated using DPPH radical-scavenging activity assay. The antibacterial activity was carried out by the agar diffusion method on three reference strains (S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli). The extract presented important amounts of phenolic compounds (266 ± 15.39 μg of gallic acid equivalent / mg extract) and flavonoids (36.44 ± 3.51 g equivalent of quercetin / mg of total flavonoid extract). It showed also a potent antioxidant activity (IC50-10.39 ± 1.03 μg/ml). The highest antiradical power (94%) is observed with a dose of 50 μg/ml; close to that exerted by vitamin C (98%) at the same concentration. The extract did not show any antibacterial effects against E.coli and P. aeruginosa. However, it presents a very interesting antibacterial activity against S. aureus (18 mm and 8 mm inhibition zone at a concentration of 200 mg/ml and 100 mg/ml respectively), result very close to erythromycin (inhibition zone of 21mm). This study confirms the antimicrobial and antioxidant interest of Thymus algeriensis plant. The evaluation of the antibacterial activity with an expanded spectrum of bacteria is necessary.
