Abstract
Literature in general and poetry in particular, was purged from the teaching programs, on the ground that it made no contribution to learning a foreign language. While many teachers agree that poetry promotes language learning and teaching, they will also add that poetic concepts and cultural assumptions are usually too difficult for EFL learners. While this might be true for poetry as a reading activity, however, the use of poetry in English language learning and teaching can provide an effective and collaborative means. Poetry, does not serve only literature, but it serves language teaching and learning. It can be used to teach and learn the language skills, and also the different areas and aspects of English language. This dissertation sheds light on poetry as a tool of English language teaching and learning. The dissertation contains two main chapters aimed at investigating teachers' attitudes towards the use of poetry as a tool to improve English language teaching and learning, and seeing whether or not poetry has any significant impact in developing students' level and enhancing their willingness to learn English. (20) Teachers at the English department were chosen to participate in this work. The teachers were randomly chosen among a population of (40) teachers. The analysis of the questionnaire reveals that teachers are aware about the crucial role of poetry in the language teaching and learning process. On the light of these results, our hypothesis comes to be almost validated by the findings obtained from the teachers' questionnaire. Hence, the present research suggests a number of pedagogical implications and recommendations for EFL teachers about the importance of including poetry in the language teaching and learning.
