dc.description.abstract | Improving learners' grammatical accuracy in using articles is among the most difficult tasks for language teachers. Some researchers believe that written corrective feedback is a fruitful teaching practice which helps learners develop more control over the problematic use of these grammatical features. However, others see it as a useless task which hinders the learning process. This study aimed at investigating the effect of direct metalinguistic feedback on learners' accurate use of articles. To fulfil this aim, an experimental and a control group consisting of thirty three (33) LMD students of english were chosen and a three-week quasi-experiment has been opted for. Then, the experimental group subjects were provided with the direct metalinguistic feedback on the erroneous use of articles. However, the control group subjects did not receive any treatment. To analyse the obtained data a paired samples t-test and an independent samples t-test were used. The results of the paired samples t-test show that there is an improvement in the use of articles within the experimental group. However, the results of the independent samples t-test reveal that this improvement is not statistically significant. Therefore, the results lead us to reject the alternative hypothesis in favour of the null hypothesis. This means that there is no great difference between the results of the post-test of the experimental and the control group. Consequently, further research on the effect of direct metalinguistic written corrective feedback on learners' accuracy in the use of articles is needed taking into account time constraints. | ar |
