Investigating politeness strategies in Algerian EFL students request emails

Abstract
The present dissertation investigates the politeness strategies employed in students' request emails that were directed to their supervisors. Email application is extensively adopted in the educational sector between teachers and students which raises interest to comprehend the key linguistic features required to perform polite and respectful request email writing.This work attempts to extract the type of politeness strategies used by EFL learners while interacting with their supervisors via email. So, the research aims at raising students' awareness towards the use of politeness strategies when addressing their teachers in a more formal manner. The current research makes use of text corpus analysis.Thirty request emails written bymaster two students at Larbi Ben Mhidi University- Oum el Bouaghi to their supervisors were analyzed. The gathered data confirm our hypothesis stating that students are unaware of the politeness strategies used in email discussions with their teachers. The findings revealed that the students employ more positive politeness strategies in addition to implementing direct language that expresses high level of imposition
