Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effect of modern seating arrangements (MSAs) particularly the U-shape, Circles, and Clusters on students' motivation in EFL classrooms at the department of english Larbi Ben M'Hidi university. It attempted to answer the following questions: do MSAs have a positive effect on students' motivation Are EFL teachers and students aware about the importance of the classroom seating arrangement (SA) Do EFL teachers apply some of these MSAs or do they depend on one fixed seating through the whole year? The participants of the study consisted of both EFL teachers and students: Twenty three permanent EFL teachers in addition to sixty randomly chosen students. Tow questionnaires were administered to investigate the effect of new ways of classroom SA on students' motivation. The results reveal that the SA can affect EFL students' motivation to learn the target language. Half of both informants proved to be aware about the importance of the classroom setups to achieve an effective teaching/learning environment. However, only a quarter of the teachers do apply some of the mentioned seatings, the U-shape in particular. The study also proposes a number of suggestions that we hope will be taken into consideration for the benefits of both teachers and students.
