Abstract
This study aimed at examining the effectiveness of mnemonic techniques on student's vocabulary knowledge at Adjali Rachid secondary school Meskiana. It attempted to answer two main questions: what role can mnemonics play in the
process of vocabulary acquisition? and can we say that when using mnemonic devices in EFL classes students will achieve better results more than any other teaching vocabulary technique in terms of retention and correct use? We select our target population from Adjali Rachid secondary school, and we choose two second year classes of literature and philosophy, to be the sample of our study. The period of treatment lasted from the beginning of the last trimester till the end of the academic year 2013/2014. In order to answer the research questions mentioned above, a pre-test was designed for that purpose, from our part we decided to teach both groups in two different ways; the experimental group received instructions using mnemonics while the control group received the traditional instructions guessing the meaning from the context. At the end of the experiment, both groups took the post-test activities; which contain the same words used in the pre-test. Statistical analysis of the findings shows significant differences between the experimental and the control group. Finally, this study end up with a number of suggestions for more research.
