Abstract
Recently, the world has seen great changes because of globalization. The latter has influenced all aspects of life across the world, where English has become the lingua franca of scientific communication. As a result, English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has been implemented in a great number of universities, particularly in non-English-speaking countries like Algeria. For this reason, a preliminary evaluation is an essential step for assessing effectiveness and guaranteeing ongoing success. This dissertation aims to investigate how effectively the strategies and plans for EMI implementation are put into practice in higher education in Algeria, focusing on the Faculty of Science and Technology at OEB University. To achieve this aim, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used, including two questionnaires for both teachers and students, as well as classroom observation. The results of this study reject the hypothesis of the success of this implementation in its current strategies and plans due to the lack of the most important requirements in EMI implementation, including inappropriate training for teachers and their low English proficiency, inadequate support for students, and the wrong pedagogy implemented in EMI classrooms. These results highlight the call for immediate improvement and reforms to improve the current situation.
