Investigating EFL students' attitudes towards the effect of using discovery on vocabulary learning

Abstract
Vocabulary learning is one of the major challenges for many learners as it is an essential part of foreign language learning. Importantly, the present study aims at investigating students' attitudes towards the effect of using discovery strategies on vocabulary learning. The hypothesis of this study is that students will have positive attitudes towards the effect of using discovery strategies as a vocabulary technique to enhance their vocabulary learning. Therefore, to improve this hypothesis, a descriptive method was adopted in which a questionnaire was given to first year students of english at Larbi Ben M'Hidi university, Oum-El-Bouaghi to get their views about using discovery strategies and their effects on vocabulary learning. The results revealed that students were aware of the importance of vocabulary, vocabulary learning strategies, and discovery strategies. Furthermore, they showed that students use vocabulary discovery strategies to learn new words. On the basis of these results, the hypothesis put forward was confirmed in that first year EFL students have positive attitudes towards the effect of using discovery strategies on vocabulary learning.
