The Effectiveness of extensive reading in improving EFL learners' use of punctuation

Abstract
Extensive reading has been the subject of many studies that highlight its effective and fundamental role in the field of foreign language learrning, especially in teaching writing. Importantly, it is believed that extensive reading enhances punctuation use as it functions as a model for writing. essentially, the research at hand seeks to examine the effectiveness of extensive reading in enhancing evnglish foreign language learners' use of punctuation. Notably, this study took place among 32 third year LMD students of letirature and civilisation at the english department at Larbi Ben M'Hidi university, Oum-El-Bouaghi, where the sample was divided into two groups (control and experimental groups). Moreover, a quasi-experiment was conducted to measure the difference between the two groups as well as to see if there is any significant change among the members of the experimental group concerning their use of the target punctuation marks (the comma, the question mark, and the period), after receiving the treatment that was conducted between the pre and post-test period. Remarkably, the results confirm that extensive reading is beneficial for enhancing the use of, the already mentioned, target punctuation marks. They also shed light on the necessity of including extensive reading within the program as a permanent module; it has a great importance in developing all aspects of language especially reading and writing (the use of punctuation marks). Therefore, it is highly important to build a reading habit among all English Foreign Language learners regardless of their level.
