Abstract
Writing in a foreign language is one of the most challenging and complex tasks forEFL learners. It requires time, efforts, and more practice. According to, writing teachersstudents inthedepartment of english, university of Oum-El-Bouaghi, do not go through the pre-writing stageTherefore, english as a foreign language teachers have to develop effective techniques and strategies in order to encourage their students to reach an acceptable piece of writing with its different types. The present study aimed at investigating the effect of graphic organizers on students' writing skill. Therefore, we hypothesized that if students use graphic organizers thentheir writing would be improved. In order to fulfill the aim of this study, a quasi experimental design was carried out. Second-year LMD students of english at the university of Oum-El-Bouaghi were selected as the target population. Two groups of 40 students were chosen as the experimental and control groups. Both groups were asked to write a cause and effect essay in the pre-test in order to test their level. After the pre-test, the experimental group received the instructions on the use of graphic organizes namely, cause and effect diagram to produce its related essay; however, the control group participants did not receive any instructions and were left with the casual method. By the end of the study, the post-test which has the same topic as the pre-test was administered for both groups. Interestingly, the findings demonstrated that that graphic organizer was significantly effective in improving the writing performance of the experimental group. Finally, we can conclude that graphic organizers are effective techniques in teaching writing.
