This dissertation reports on language rivalry in algerian academic settings between the researchers' needs and the state's biased Language planning policies. The study is a critical matter to be dealt with as it reveals the problems that postgraduate students and researchers face when attempting to write. The research is constructed on the assumption that the algerian researcher's academic research, writings are hindered by the use of the French language and thereby deprived from any international recognition for any scientific contribution, subsequently, there is a tendency towards the english language, a primary gate from which scientific work can be published internationally. The study draws on language program evaluation, english for specific purposes and needs analysis (study needs, academic needs and publication needs). Using interviews and questionnaires, the study elaborates how postgraduates and researchers perceive the importance of language in the field of study. A clear and attached bias toward the use of french in the algerian academic setting is observed, although algerian researchers are extremely familiar and at ease using french, they tend to demonstrate academic wants towards english. The results of the study demonstrate that there are quite a lot of mismatches between the students' perceived english communicative needs and ESP courses that they were subject to. The study also reveals many deficiencies and an inadequacy concerning the needs of researcher's in algerian academic settings. This study is meant to pinpoint postgraduates' views as to which of the two languages, is/are held to be important in relation to the purposes of conducting scientific research and scientific publication. The study concludes that French may not fulfill the needs of algerian researchers and postgraduates, therefore, english is addressed to be taken into account.ar
