Investigating the translation accuracy of linguistic concepts used in master’s dissertation abstracts

Abstract
Translating English linguistic terms into their exact Arabic version is not an easy task for EFL students; this is due to the absence of standardization of linguistic concepts in Arabic. The aim of this research is to investigate the translation accuracy of linguistic concepts that are used in Master's dissertation abstracts of EFL students, and to highlight the importance of the standardization of the Arabic equivalents. We adopted a corpus-based analysis as a tool of our research. We collected twenty abstracts of Master's dissertations at the department of English of Larbi Ben M'hidi University, elaborated in the past nine years. We analysed the translation accuracy of the suggested equivalents of forty-one English linguistic terms, by using a unified dictionary "THE UNIFIED DICTIONARY OF LINGUISTIC TERMS" (2002) that contains standardized Arabic linguistic terms. Data analysis has shown that the same English linguistic term was translated in two completely different ways; many students translated English linguistic terms inaccurately in Arabic, so most of them did not use unified dictionaries. In addition, some students left the linguistic term in the English language and put it between brackets, and others did not translate some linguistic words at all. For an appropriate, accurate and exact translation, we recommend EFL Master students to use Unified Dictionaries and Glossaries that are inspired from these dictionaries where linguistic terms have standardized and accurate equivalents. At the end, we suggested a standardized and accurate glossary inspired from the words already analysed in this research.
