Abstract
Teaching english vocabulary could be achieved via different methods. This study mainly investigates the effectiveness of watching english movie clips with L1 subtitles on EFL learner's vocabulary learning. It is carried out at the english department, university L'arbi Ben M'Hidi in Oum-El-Bouaghi with first year students in the academic year 2013/2014. We adopted a 'mixed method approach', in which two research tools were used, 'qualitative and quantitative', in order to gain an understanding of the study under investigation. For the quantitative method, we used a quasi-experiment in which we worked with two groups for six weeks. All participants are pre-tested to ensure that the target words are unknown; then they were exposed to four english movie clips in which the language of legal matters was used. However, unlike the experimental group who viewed the movie clips with subtitles, the control group viewed them without subtitles. After that, an immediate post-test was administered to check their vocabulary learning. For the qualitative method, a questionnaire was designed to check students' attitudes toward watching english movies in general. The results indicate that there were significant differences between the control and the experimental group, in that this latter performed better. At the end, we have come up with the conclusion that the majority of students do watch english movies with subtitles and find them helpful and useful to learn new vocabulary in the target language.
