Abstract
Language and culture are two inseparable entities. One's mastery of the linguistic elements alone does not guarantee he will be able to communicate through a language. Therefore, the need for teaching the target culture for successful language
learning is vital. This dissertation is concerned with the importance of culture teaching in the foreign language classroom. The main interest here is to see to what extent culture is important in the english department of Oum-El-Bouaghi university.
So, both teachers and students' awareness of the significance of culture teaching is part of the work. The tools in this research are a questionnaire for the teachers and a discourse completion test for the students. The results showed that even though teachers are aware of the importance of integrating culture in the teaching of english
as a foreign language most of their teaching methods exclude cultural elements. The results also show that the majority of students of english in the university of Oum-El-Bouaghi are not aware of the close relationship between language teaching and culture teaching which leads in many cases to a misuse of the language.
