Abstract
Applying homework to EFL students is essential in academic studies because it helps them understand the curriculum and develops their writing skills, especially if these tasks are related to writing essays. However, with modern technological development and the revolution brought about recently by artificial intelligence, many students rely on these means, like ChatGPT. This study aims to investigate the attitudes of both EFL instructors and students regarding the use of ChatGPT in homework assignments. Especially since there are some previous studies that supported its use in academic written work, this is why it is important to conduct this study to verify the perspectives of teachers and students about its use in homework assignments and its impact on students’ skills, particularly in writing essays. In addition, it is important to obtain future suggestions about using this tool for homework tasks. A mixed methods approach has been used to answer the questions of the present study; a questionnaire was distributed to a randomly selected sample of 40 third-year EFL students, along with a structured interview with 10 EFL instructors at L’arbi Ben Mhidi University in Oum El Bouaghi. The results of the research revealed that both EFL teachers and students have different attitudes. On the one hand, it can be considered an auxiliary tool to save time and effort and a useful model for collecting ideas, getting suggestions, or offering feedback. However, on the other hand, excessive reliance on it and unconscious use raise the risk of declining various skills, such as writing skill, problem-solving skill, creativity, etc.
