Abstract
Plant contains enormous biochemical compound that called phytochemicals. In these days biosubstances from plant sources are in great demand because of theirnumerousbiologicalactivitieswhich have positive effects on health. Capparisspinosa L. Capparidaceae, commonly called El-Kabbarcaper in Algeria. is an aromatic plant growingwild in the dry regions, islargelydistributed all over the mediterranean basin and istraditionallyused to treatmany illnesses, such as liver and kidney diseases. The second plant isAristolochialonga (A. longa) is a medicinal plant belonging to Aristolochiaceaefamily, whichiswidely distributed in the tropical and temperateregions. A. longalocally known as "Barraztam" is a speciescommonly used in algeriantraditionalmedicine. Many traditionalhealersalso use asmallamount of its rhizome powderwithhoney or salted butter for the treatment of abdominal pain and upperrespiratory tract infections. The aim of thisstudyis the estimation of total phenolic and the evaluation of antioxidantactivities of the methanolicextractobtained from the root of speciesCapparisspinosa L and Aristolochialonga L. The total phenolicwasdetermined by Folin-Ciocalteu and the antioxidantcapacitywasperformedusing the Free Radical Scavenging Assay (DPPH) and reducing power activity (FRAP). The levels of total phenolicswere 47.26 ±0.72mg gallicacidequivalent per gram of extract (mg GAE/g) for Capparisspinosa L. and 58.13±0.48 mg GAE/g for Aristolochialonga. The results of antioxidantactivities indicated an important effect in DPPH test in comparisonwith the standards: BHT, BHA. ICS-112.57 ±0,5mg/ml, and IC50-65.23±2.49 mg/mL for DPPH and reducing power activityrespectively. For the second plant the IC50-125.40±2.40 g/mL and IC50-65.23±2.49 g/mL, respectively.Furthermore, the resultshowed high levels of phenolic content. Te resultsshowedthatthesetwoplantscouldbeasignifcant source of medically important naturalcompounds.
