Abstract
A great deal of research has casted light on FLA (foreign language anxiety) over the years. The debilitating effect of FLA on students' performance, especially their oral performance made foreign language researchers in a constant challenge to suggest brand new methods to alleviate students' speaking anxiety. The main aim of the present study is to identify the impact of the use of mobile self-recordings by EFL students on their speaking anxiety. Accordingly, a quantitative approach model based on a quasi-experimental design was followed in order to examine the hypotheses that the use of mobile self-recordings would or would not reduce learners' speaking anxiety. The experiment was conducted with two groups of first-year students of English at Larbi Ben M'hidi University. The public speaking classroom anxiety scale (PSCAS) was administered to measure data about learners' FLSA as a pre-test and post-test. The experimental group recorded the assigned activities by the teacher before each oral session during weeks. The control group were assigned the same activities without any particular treatement. The obtained results revealed that there was a statistically significant decrease in the speaking anxiety levels of the experimental group subjects. Moreover, the insignificant improvement of the control group results asserts the usefulness of the mobile self-recordings in reducing learners' speaking anxiety and therefore the alternative hypothesis was confirmed. Finally, it is suggested that mobile self-recording techniques should be implemented in language classes to help students cope with their anxiety and to reflect on their spoken language.
