Abstract
Democracy export and promotion have always been part US foreign policy, as ideals
and values of freedom and human rights have always been ingrained within the American society. After World War II, the USA helped to develop and to support different political systems all around the world in its role as the sole super power willing to spread democracy. The United States supported even autocratic governments as a means to promote stability and protect its interests. After the 9/11 attacks ,however, the USA shifted its support for autocracies in the Middle East in favor of advancing democracy through any means necessary to protect its interests. This Memoire will focus on the motivations and history of US democracy promotion around the world after the Second World War and after the 9/11 and how successful and real those efforts were. As the Middle East has been a central focus of the US foreign policy; the memoire will take Iraq as a case study.
