Abstract
Research into the indispensability of vocabulary as a strand of the essence in language mastery has long been endorsed by an illimitable number of experts. Basically, previous studies proved that a fairly good body of research tackled the significance of augmenting students' vocabulary knowledge through the implementation of morphemic analysis. Nonetheless, incorporating this latter as an explicitly instructional tool that would contribute to students' vocabulary enrichment as well as their foreign language text comprehension was only addressed by few academics. For this reason, the present study aims at thoroughly investigating the effect of explicitly teaching morphemic analysis on EFL students' vocabulary attainment and text comprehension and if there exists an association between the aforementioned concepts. In pursuance of these objectives, a quasi-experimental approach was adopted, where 40 EFL students, split into two groups, at Phénix International Center for Training and Consulting were selected as the sample of the study. Both groups were pre- and post-tested with utterly dissimilar treatments in the midst of the two tests. In ample words, participants in the experimental group undertook a series of explicitly deployed morphemic analysis lessons and activities whereas those in the control group were merely taught vocabulary through a rather ordinary method. The results obtained from a quantitative examination of the data collected revealed that the integration of morphemic analysis had a significant impact on enriching students' vocabulary knowledge which, in turn, substantially affected, to a positive extent, their foreign language text comprehension. On account of these findings, a well-developed discussion is established followed by a number of accentuated pedagogical implications. Light is shed on the restraints that obstructed this work from being more elaborate. To this end, recommendations are proposed for further research.
