The Effect of contextual guessing strategies on enhaancing EFL students' vocabulary acquisition

Abstract
Guessing the meaning of unknown vocabularies with in a context is an adoptive strategy by most foreign learners for the purpose of acquiring new words. This dissertation seeks to investigate the importance of GFC strategy in enhancing vocabulary acquisition among second year LMD students at the english department of Larbi Ben M'Hidi university of Oum-El-Bouaghi. So, In order to examine the research hypothesis that students who are exposed to the guessing from context clues would improve their vocabulary acquisition, a quasi-experimental study has been conducted. In doing so, a pre-test, post-test group research design is used. The sample population comprised of two groups of second year LMD students at the university of Larbi Ben M'Hidi. The sample constitutes of 40 participants. The experimental group was exposed to the guessing strategies for a five sessions. Each session lasted 40 minutes. Whereas the control group was left with the old methods of inferring the meaning of the unknown words.Data are collected.The results of the study show that the experimental group outperformed the control group. At last, suggestions for future research and limitations of the study are presented
