Abstract
The electrical power systems can be constrained by overvoltages of any nature. These overvoltages are very dangerous insofar as they cause significant damage on the transmission lines insulation and on the equipments composed the electrical power system (Transformer for example). The lightning overvoltages are most difficult and most restrictive which the substation is subjected to, because of the high frequency influence. Consequently the necessity for protecting this substation from these overvoltages is necessary. The most used protection devices against overvoltages in the present time are the surge arresters (ZnO) because of their higher electrical performances. A complete model of the system enables us to analyze the problem of protection in its complexity. We will call upon the EMTP for this purpose. This work will be interested in the study of the high voltage substation protection against the lightning overvoltages and of the various factors which could influence the protection quality. The example will be established starting from study of a real substation located in the East of Algeria
