| dc.description.abstract | Among the significant parts of any master dissertation is the literature review. This latter, by definition, is a piece of written discourse in academic writing, and any piece of academic writing cannot be delivered randomly. Instead, there are some rules that govern it and should be clear, concise, structured, and cohesive. Thus, writers tend to employ certain markers that are known as discourse and metadiscourse markers to achieve cohesiveness. Unfortunately, these markers have been examined more in the spoken discourse in different languages rather than in the written discourse. Correspondingly, this study aims at investigating the use of these markers in the literature reviews written by MA students from the Departments of English and French, Larbi Ben M’Hidi University. Furthermore, it attempts to identify the most used categories/ sub-categories of these markers and indicate the similarities and differences in each corpus. To achieve such aims, a corpus comprised of twelve literature reviews was divided into two sub- corpora, containing six samples in each, and was analysed using AntConc (2019). The findings revealed that there existed similarities and differences between the two corpora. Interestingly, those markers were present in both corpora; it was noted that discourse markers were highly present in the French corpus unlike the metadiscourse markers while metadiscourse markers were highly present in the English corpus unlike discourse markers with a difference of 2% in both corpora that made them similar at some level. Similarly, the Chi-square test's results confirmed the null hypothesis which states that there is no significant difference between the literature reviews written by Master 2 students of Didactics in the Departments of English and French, Larbi Ben M'Hidi University, with regard to the use of discourse and metadiscourse markers. The findings can add to researches within the same area of interest and give suggestions to future research. | ar |
