Abstract
The present study investigates the Dogme ELT approach and its effectiveness in developing EFL learners' communicative competence. Two questionnaires have been administered to 32 teachers of oral expression located in three areas: Larbi Ben M'Hidi, Oum-El-Bouaghi; Mentouri, Constantine; and Hadj Lakhdar, Batna universities. An attitudinal questionnaire has been designed to draw teachers' attitudes towards the effectiveness of Dogme ELT in developing learners' communicative competence. The results show that oral expression teachers hold favourable attitudes towards dogme ELT principles in developing EFL learners' communicative skills. Secondly, a frequency questionnaire was designed to compare teachers' attitudes and their classroom practices towards certain factors-related to dogme ELT. Although more than half of the teachers have not heard about dogme ELT; yet, they claim that they practise some of its principles within the context of the communicative language learning. To determine the relation between teachers' attitudes and their classroom practices, the correlation coefficient is calculated. The results show that there is a weak correlation between their attitudes towards the principles of dogme ELT and their actual classroom practices, indicating the difficulties that dogme ELT as an approach encounters hoping for a future dogme ELT style.
