The concept of time travel, while is often explored in science fiction, offers a unique opportunity to examine the psychological effects of changing past events. In the movie "The Butterfly Effect" 2004 which employs the technique of time travel, is well stocked in Trauma and psychological disorders which makes it the perfect choice for this research. The aim of this thesis is to unravel the psychological complexities within the movie especially in relation to the concepts of time travel, trauma and memory. In particular, this research seeks to identify the struggles that the protagonist Evan faces in altered realties when trying to rectify past traumatic events in search for redemption, salvation and healing. Our task then is to examine the concept of time travel in the movie and its pychological implications and how each modification in the past creates a different reality with diffrent unexpected results. In order to explore the unique aspects of time travel and the psychological complexities of the movie, we decided to borrow the psychoanalytic ideas of Sigmund Freud. We do believe that drawing on Freud’s ideason time, memory, trauma and repressed memoy would help understand the effects of trauma and also uncover the reasons behind Evan’s manipulation of time. In order to examine the positive role of time travel, we attempted to analyse the main characters of the movie which reveals the uniqness of time travel representing it as a healing tool.
