Abstract
English is a universal language that is widely used, thus, teaching this language to young learners turned into a major concern in Algeria, especially in recent years. This study is a macro evaluation of the new Algerian textbook of English entitled "My Book of English" for the fourth grade primary school. By surveying it as a whole from cover to cover, this study aims to assess its richness and appropriateness in all aspects, and to draw insights in order to redress the feeble areas in "My Book of English" and to hint the syllabus designers in order to improve the future EFL materials. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach that is based on Cunningsworth's (1995) evaluation checklist. The analysis detected that the textbook "My Book of English" is an appropriate learning material that assists in the teaching learning process. However, it was found that "My Book of English" missed some essential aspects of superiority including authenticity, difficulty level, etc. Throughout this study we focus on crucial recommendations that should be taken into consideration in order to achieve better versions in future EFL textbooks for young learners. The textbook designers should be aware of the noted deficiencies and shortcomings and should investigate other superior textbooks to develop the next designed teaching materials.
