Designing a syllabus in english for specific purposes for subject matter teachers

Abstract
Language as a medium of transmitting information and knowledge has a great importance in teaching other subjects. This study aims to identify the needs of the subject-matter teachers at the Faculty of Science and Technology, L’Arbi Ben M’hidi University, Oum El Bouaghi. using purposive sampling technique, a sample of 37 participants were selected from the population to gather the data needed to conduct a needs analysis process. After the identification of these needs, a syllabus sample was provided. The research tool used to collect the required data for the needs analysis process was the “questionnaire”. The analysis was based on percentages and frequencies. The analysis of the findings revealed that the subject-matter teachers at the Science and Technology Faculty have a positive attitude toward English and learning it. In addition to that, they want to achieve proficiency in the language in general and speaking in particular. Based on these results an ESP syllabus was designed taking into consideration the needs and interests of the participants. This research generated a set of ideas and recommendations for future research in the field.
