Protective effect of aqueous extract of teucrium polium against hemato-hepatotoxicity and inflammation induced by acrylamide

dc.description.abstractTeucrium polium L. is a traditional medicinal plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae family, and has been utilized in a variety of therapies. This plant is rich in polyphenols and flavonoids. Acrylamide (ACR) is a toxic industrial chemical which can be found in carbohydrates-rich food prepared at high temperatures causing toxicity. In this study, we evaluated the protective effect of T.polium on hemato-hepatotoxicity and inflammation induced by ACR. Male Albino Wistar rats were divided into four groups and treated by gavage for 21 days: group I used as control, group II received ACR (20mg/kg bw), group III received extract of T.polium (400 mg/kg bw) and group IV received extract of T.polium and ACR. Blood was collected, and liver was removed for histological studies. ACR caused inflammation and hemato-cytotoxicity as monitored by significant increase in the count of white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and significant. decrease in the count of red blood cells and platelets, packed cell volume and hemoglobin level. Moreover, in the ACR group, histopathological examination of liver confirmed the hematological analysis by observing lobular inflammation, infiltration of lymphocytes, and liver tissue injuries. However, the hemato- hepatotoxicity was reduced in animals treated with T.polium and ACR as seen by amelioration in all studied parameters, and by recovery of liver tissue from damage and inflammation. Therefore, T.polium contains substances that are efficient in hepato-hemato protection from ACR toxicity.
