Abstract
This dissertation is concerned with an important factor, among many, which affects students' motivation: the teacher's behaviour. Reference is made to particular teachers' behaviours, namely personal traits, immediacy behaviours, and classroom management behaviours (Dornyei, 2001), which are proved to have a great advantage in enhancing students' motivation. An attempt is made to investigate whether teachers' behaviours at the english department, at Larbi Ben M'Hidi university demotivate students or not. Our hypothesis, that the behaviour of teachers at the english department, at Larbi Ben M'Hidi university may demotivate learners, has been confirmed through both teachers' and student' questionnaires. The results gained from the questionnaires demonstrate that students' level of motivation is low, that both students' and teachers' perceptions about motivating teacher behaviours are conflicting, and that teachers exhibit only some of these motivating behaviours. On the basis of these findings, recommendations are suggested to teachers to draw more attention to the behaviours which they do not exhibit in class, namely, "supporting students' autonomy", "encouraging mastery goals", "showing enthusiasm", "encouraging cooperativeness", and "immediacy behaviours".
