From bombs to raisin: the American German relations pre and post the Berlin blockade 1948-1949
(University of Oum El Bouaghi, 2023) Mazouz, Salsabil Ayat El Rahmane; Siouane, Asma; Filali, Billel
This research aims at analyzing the reasons behind the United States decision to readjust its foreign policy toward Germany and notably unveiling the realities behind this reorientation. It seeks to investigate the non-aligned, inconsistent foreign policy of the United States and its ambivalent relations with Germany. In order to understand the underlying reasons for the United States reorientation of foreign policy toward Germany, this study aims to thoroughly examine the history of American-German relations. Germans made significant contributions to American society in numerous fields, but these contributions were faced by increasing animosity. During the two World Wars, American-German relations witnessed the worst scenario ever expected, but they later transformed into a democratic alliance motivated by the desire to protect American economic interests and curb the spread of communism after the Berlin Blockade. The research came to the conclusion that the U.S. Airlift of Berlin was not dedicated for humanitarian reasons, as the American official discourse claim. The study shows that it was a guise to prevent the spread of communism and to guarantee that Germany would be a future partner to the U.S. and not a serious threat for the American interests.

Investigating the effect of the virtual and presential classes on developing the Algerian EFL learners emotional intelligence
(University of Oum El Bouaghi, 2023) Lalouani, Islam Mousadek El Mourtadha; Ayadi, Karim
Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been a topic of much interest and research in recent years. Due to its positive impacts on language learning. Researchers in education are always trying to propose new ways to maximize the effects of emotional intelligence in language classrooms. The major aim of the current study is to investigate the effect of the presential and virtual classes on the development of EFL learners' emotional intelligence in oral expression courses. Accordingly, a quantitative method model based on an experiment is adopted in order to examine the research hypothesis that the presential or the virtual teaching mode has a higher effect on the enhancement of EFL students EI. The experiment was conducted with two groups of second-year students of English at Larbi Ben M'hidi University. The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) was used to collect data about the students' EI levels. The results obtained revealed that there was a statistically significant stability in the overall EI levels of participants in both experimental groups, reflecting an average emotional intelligence level. Moreover, perceptions towards the use, effectiveness, and difficulty of the activities applied in the training indicated a noticeable increase albeit remaining at an average level. Finally, the lack of amelioration in the results of the virtual group and the noteworthy improvement in the presential group results led to the conclusion that the training was effective in enhancing theEI level and therefore the research hypothesis was confirmed. Eventually, it is recommended that EI competencies should be integrated in language classes. Also, students can use them to ease their language learning process and heighten their EI levels.

Corruption and hyporcisy in Charles Dickens’s Novel Oliver Twist
(University of Oum El Bouaghi, 2023) Sahraoui, Aymen; Zaouaga, Moncef; Stiti, Rinad
The dissertation explores the identification of the social phenomena that is found within the literary work of Charles Dickens. Focusing on the novel Oliver Twist, the study aims to identify the two social phenomena that are represented in the novel more in the Victorian era. The study is conducted on the representation of hypocrisy and corruption and the impact of the two on the aspects of the environment in which the novel takes place, and the personality of the characters of the novel. Through a descriptive analysis of the novel, we thoroughly identify the portrayal of the two phenomena, as we argue that Charles Dickens didn't mention directly hypocrisy and corruption in his work. We also rely on the different critics and research conducted concerning the previously mentioned subject. The analysis of the characters and events of the novel highlights the major occurrences of hypocrisy and corruption and portrays how the social defect is manifested in it, as well as through the behaviorism of the different characters mentioned in the novel. Therefore, the results of the study contribute to identifying the manifestation of corruption and hypocrisy in the literary work of Charles Dickens and offer concrete evidence of the existence of the two previously mentioned social occurrences.

A Thematic analysis of the statement of the problem section in master theses: the case of EFL master students at Larbi Ben M’hidi University and TESOL master students at San Francisco University
(University of Oum El Bouaghi, 2023) Reribi, Wissal; Chaira, Farid
Every research needs to be based on a well-articulated statement of the problem section. The statement of the problem section in research informs about the problem that targets a study. However, most English as a foreign language (EFL) master students are unaware of this essential writing part. The aim of this study is to explore how EFL master students from Larbi Ben M'hidi University write the statement of the problem section in their master theses and proposals. Additionally, it investigates the difference between how native and non-native speakers of English write this section. The content structure of the statement of the problem sections in master theses from two different universities was analysed using a qualitative thematic analysis. Two corpora of 10 sections each were collected from the English Department at University of Oum El Bouaghi in Algeria and the International and Multicultural Education Department at the University of San Francisco in the United States of America. The qualitative data analysis software MAXQDA was used for a more accurate analysis. The findings of this study revealed that contrary to the corpus of San Francisco that included the central theme 'pointing the problem' in all ten sections, 50% of the sections of non-native speakers of English did not include the theme about pointing the problem. This actively illustrates that master students could not develop a well-articulate statement of a worthy problem section as a starting point to their research due to lack of academic skills. The results of the study clearly indicate that EFL students from Larbi Ben Mhidi University encounter serious difficulties in conducting the research problem section. On this end, Pedagogical implications are stated and recommendations are suggested for further research.
