Abstract
The Geranium (Pelargoniumgraveolens) essential oilobtained by hydro distillationyielded an 0.15 % on freshet. Basis. Seventeenchemicalconstituentsrepresenting>96 % of the essential oil were identified gaschromatography-mass spectrometryanalysis (GC-MS). Major constituentswere Citronellol (24.55 %), Geraniol (20.09 %), Menthone (18.09%), Citronellyl formate (9.04 %) and 10-epi-7-eudesmol (6.95 %). The essential oilwasalsoanalyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FT-IR). The analysis of recordedspectrumrevealedthat the main compound of tested essential oildominatethevibrationalspectra. TraditionallyGeraniumisused to staunchbleeding, healing of wounds, ulcers and skin disorders and also in the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery and colic. The oil has antibacterial and insecticidalproperties and is profuselyused in aromatherapy. Due to theseresults, wemay propose the use of thisnatural substance in the pharmaceuticalindustry.
