Focusing on the novel Oliver Twist, the study aims to identify the two social phenomena that are represented in the novel more in the Victorian era. The study is conducted on the representation of hypocrisy and corruption and the impact of the two on the aspects of the environment in which the novel takes place, and the personality of the characters of the novel. Through a descriptive analysis of the novel, we thoroughly identify the portrayal of the two phenomena, as we argue that Charles Dickens didn't mention directly hypocrisy and corruption in his work. We also rely on the different critics and research conducted concerning the previously mentioned subject. The analysis of the characters and events of the novel highlights the major occurrences of hypocrisy and corruption and portrays how the social defect is manifested in it, as well as through the behaviorism of the different characters mentioned in the novel. Therefore, the results of the study contribute to identifying the manifestation of corruption and hypocrisy in the literary work of Charles Dickens and offer concrete evidence of the existence of the two previously mentioned social occurrences.
