It provides an historical background on the use of money in American electoral contests, the two major types of political funds: Public financing which is offered to political candidates under certain conditions, and private funding that raises many concerns among anti- corruption supporters. The work also addresses the major sources of campaign financing and how it raises the dilemma of money donation equals free speech. It further explores the several rules that have attempted to regulate the process of fundraising as well as money's incredible flood into American electoral contests since the founding of the Republic. Since running for American presidency is a very expensive task. The costs keep rising over the years pushing candidates to solicit huge amounts of money in order to be able to cover the campaign costs. To give a consistent explanation to this issue, the work analyzes the relationship between money and election outcomes, taking the 2016 presidential electoral campaign as a case study. Overall, the work concludes that money is among the determining factors in the U.S. presidential election outcomes.
