Item Antimicrobial activity of polyphenol-rich extracts from solanum nigrum leaves(University of Oum El Bouaghi, 2021-12-13) Nani, Abdelhafid; Boullal, Ahmed; Bahiani, Malika; Boukhatache, Ishak; Boubekeur, Amina; Mellouki, LatifaPolyphenols are molecules found specifically in the plant kingdom. Polyphenols, mainly flavonoids, are known by their various biological effects. They have anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, analgesic and antimicrobial activities. The objective of this study is to assess the content of polyphenols and flavonoids, and to evaluate the antibacterial activity of different phenolic compounds from a wild plant, Solanumnigrum L, which grows in the Adrar region. Our results show that Solanumnigrum L contains an average amount of polyphenols estimated at 10.74 mg GAE/g DM. Moreover, the fractionation of the total flavonoid available in the aqueous phase, with ethyl acetate followed by n-butanol, revealed that n- butanolphase contains the highest rate (48% of total flavonoids). The antibacterial activity showed the effectiveness of all extracts against Escherichia coli and prominently against Staphylococcus aureus. However, Clostridiumgenusseemed to be resistantvis-a-vis all tested extracts. Thus, Solanumnigrum leaves could be used to treat some infectious diseases.
